Handwashing on Wheels

Description

Country and region: Bangladesh, 15 locations in Dhaka

Organisation: WaterAid Bangladesh, Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority, and Embassy of Sweden, Dhaka, Bangladesh
Point person and role: Faysal Abbas, Manager, Advocacy and Communications, WaterAid Bangladesh

Unique characteristics of the setting: Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh is the largest and most densely populated city in the country. Space is limited for everyone and there is a lack of functional handwashing facilities in public settings. To respond to the surge of the COVID-19 pandemic, WaterAid Bangladesh launched Handwashing on Wheels, an innovative handwashing unit that is mobile and accessible to everyday commuters in the city’s most populated areas. These units provide easy access to handwashing with soap and water and encourage people to wash their hands frequently in public settings, which are further supported with triggers using behavioural change communications.
